Repair and Restoration

I bring the same meticulous attention to structural and musical detail to the reconditioning and updating of older instruments as I do to the construction of new ones.  All my restoration work is based on the most current knowledge of historical building practices. A fine, professionally made harpsichord or clavichord built only a few decades ago can benefit from thoroughgoing rework conforming to historical practices that have come to light long since the instrument was originally made.

Restoration and updating typically consists of:

  • replacing existing plastic jacks with custom wooden jacks and new registers, and requilling with black delrin plectra

  • developing an historically authentic stringing list appropriate to the characteristics of your particular instrument

  • restringing with Malcolm Rose wire, which is made to replicate as closely as possible the characteristics of wires used by ancient builders.

These painstaking efforts can breathe new life even into an instrument that already produces a beautiful sound.  Clients for whom I have worked have been greatly pleased to find that their instruments produce a fuller, warmer, and more resonant sound than they previously  possessed.

I would be pleased to discuss your needs for restoration work.  Please contact me.
